Apple Files Patent for iPhone's Swappable Lenses

clock June 19, 2012 00:16 by author Jeremy

As if smartphones weren't encroaching on the camera industry's turf enough, Apple's latest plans may sway a few more loyal customers to their cause. It's common to see phones with up to 12-megapixel cameras attached to them, which certainly makes digital cameras lose their appeal - after all, who wants to lug around an extra electronic when your cell phone can handle it all?

Apple seems to be thinking along the same lines, and recently filed a patent to have an iPhone with swappable lenses. Digital camera fans beware, since basic point-and-shoot cameras normally don't even have the option to change lenses.

For Apple, this could mean gaining a few consumers from the opposition, as Android phones don't have swappable lenses just yet. Meanwhile, for the digital camera industry, this is just another obstacle to overcome as they struggle with their hold on the market.

However, better pictures on your smartphone doesn't come without its quirks. While no official information has been released yet (such as, say, whether this is even going to be a feature in the next iPhone), one can only imagine what kind of an effect all the picture-taking and lens-swapping will have on your battery life.

Rumors and Photos of a New iPhone Casing

clock June 6, 2012 00:57 by author Jeremy

With WWDC 2012 (Apple's premier yearly event) coming up (next week from the 11th through 15th), there's no shortage of rumors about what will come of it. Focusing on Developers and Apps? A new iPhone? Twelve variations of the iPad 6? If we're lucky, some of these rumors are attached to pictures. While they don't necessarily count as proof that the rumor is truth, it does at least stir the pot up a little bit.

And lucky is exactly what we are, since 9to5Mac has managed to acquire a few snapshots of what looks like the latest iPhone casing.

As seen above, there will be both black and white variations. The back casing itself seems metallic, which is new to the iPhone. Near the bottom, there's also a smaller connector port, in contrast to the larger one that Apple currently uses. The audio jack has been relocated to the bottom right, and there is now a small gap between the camera lens and the LED flash.

Along with these cases, 9to5Mac also has a few photos of the screens, backs, and frames. Be sure to check out the source link below for more snapshots.

USPS Restricts Mailing of Lithium Batteries

clock June 1, 2012 22:41 by author Jeremy

As of May 16, 2012, USPS has changed part of their mailing rules and standards. Lithium batteries and cells (both rechargeable and non-rechargeable) are now not allowed to be shipped internationally or to any APO, FPO,  and DPO locations. This means that mailers also cannot send out products that have lithium batteries inside of them, including tech gadgets such as cell phones, MP3 players, laptops, and digital camera.

After January 1, 2013, limited quantities may be allowed to ship out internationally, as long as "the batteries are properly installed in the personal electronic devices they are intended to operate."

This does not affect the current rules for mailing lithium products within the United States, and lithium batteries (and their corresponding technical products) may still be shipped out normally. However, for international shipping, mailers may have to resort to private carriers such as FedEx.

Sprint Forums Say HTC EVO 4G LTE Will Arrive May 24th, Despite Customs Interference

clock May 23, 2012 01:11 by author Jeremy

Despite the Customs Debacle surrounding HTC phones recently, it seems enough have made it into the country for Spring to warrant an actual release date. In their community forums, Sprint says that the EVO 4G LTE should arrive "on or around Thursday, May 24 to customers who pre-ordered the device online from Sprint."

This doesn't tell us much for those who didn't pre-order and wished to walk into a store to buy one. It also doesn't tell us why it states "on or around", nor does that sound promising. It could just be that shipping would delay your order by a few days, but we'll find out soon enough.
