The future of computer peripherals might advance with a keyboard that can power your laptop, netbook or even desktop computer through mechanical keystrokes. The technology uses piezoelectrics, which converts pressure into an electric current. Each keystroke on the keyboard can create an electric current to recharge and power computers.

Researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne have been developing piezoelectric thin films to turn mechanical pressure into electricity. Two other aspects are being looked at as well that include a low-cost, compact production of piezoelectric devices and a more efficient way to power computer microchips. Other innovative ideas are also being created, such as piezoelectric running shoes to charge mobile devices.

So, if your laptop is running out of power, just start typing more to recharge it. Running low on cell phone battery power? Put your piezoelectric shoes on and start running!
