Laptops causing the Toasted Skin Syndrome

clock October 14, 2010 23:02 by author Ty

Scientists from Switzerland are identifying a condition where skin is exposed to heat for long periods of time and are calling it the, “Toasted Skin Syndrome.” This can occur with laptops where heat can exceed temperatures of 125 degrees Fahrenheit. The extreme heat is usually caused by a combination of components heating up internally in the laptop ranging from the batteries, power supply, processor, memory, hard drive, motherboard, on board video, and other laptop components. Extended periods of exposure to this kind of heat on your lap can create discolored and sponge-patterned skin on your legs. Chronic damage to the skin could lead to a small risk of further skin damage with long-term use of the laptop.

There is nothing new with laptops heating up and feeling too hot to put on our lap for actual use. However, if your laptop is getting too hot to touch, you should turn it off and think about aiding to the internal cooling. External USB laptop fan platforms, laptop stands, and cleaning the laptop air vents can help increase air flow to the internal components of your laptop. Just be aware that extended periods of hot laptop time could leave some marks on your lap that you might not find so amusing.

HP Laptop That Lasts 24 Hours on Battery

clock September 24, 2010 18:42 by author Jeremy

Between mobile computing, mass-texting, constant recording, and non-stop work, today's technology age relies a lot on battery powered devices. Unfortunately, you still have to recharge your electronic device at some point. Longer lasting batteries are an important factor for consumers, and HP is starting to show just how competitive they are in this field.

With HP's latest laptop model, the HP EliteBook 6930p, consumers can reach up to 24 hours of battery life without having to charge their device once. Of course, this has certain prerequisites, namely their Ultra Capacity Battery and an LED display, but it may just be worth it for customers who are always on the move.

Though the EliteBook 6930p is the only HP battery so far to pass the 24-hour mark, there are still several other HP laptops that can surpass 10, and even 15, hours. The 6730b and the 6530b can both pass 15 hours with the Ultra Capacity Battery, and the 2533r can hit 15 hours with just the HP Extended Life Battery.

Currently, HP’s Ultra Capacity Battery is only available for a handful of models (in comparison to their large laptop selection). All other replacement HP laptop battery models are available on eBatts.com where you can find Hi-Capacity laptop batteries for HP laptops and other laptop manufacturers as well.

Which Laptops have the Best Battery Life?

clock June 14, 2010 20:48 by author Ty

Laptop Battery Life HP Dell Apple Acer Toshiba Gateway

Sometimes a long laptop battery life is the key factor in why we own a laptop. CNET has done some extensive testing on which laptops have the longest battery life. Of course a netbook would be the winner in this category, but CNET has classified them into different classes. These classes are netbooks, 13-inch laptops, midsize laptops, and desktop replacements.

Each laptop manufacturer has their own determination on how long their laptop's battery life is supposed to last. So instead of having these results skewed, CNET did a benchmark by using a standard video playback test to see how long each laptop lasted playing a movie. Below were their results.

Netbooks (10/11-inch displays) Battery life
Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 (SD) 459 minutes
MSI Wind U160 438 minutes
Acer Aspire One 532h-2326 429 minutes

13-inch laptops
Apple MacBook, Spring 2010 387 minutes
Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch, Spring 2010 360 minutes
Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1324 359 minutes

Midsize laptops (14/15-inch displays)
Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch Spring 2010 356 minutes
Gateway EC5809u 343 minutes
HP Pavilion dv4-2165dx 334 minutes

Desktop replacments (16/17/18-inch displays)
Toshiba A505-S6025 268 minutes
Asus K60IJ-RBLX05 205 minutes
HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx 178 minutes
