Apple Laptop Batteries Hacked for Security Flaws

Apple MacBook Air

Apple laptop batteries have a security vulnerability that allows a hacker to damage or brick the laptop battery to be unusable or overcharge the laptop battery to where it can potentially start a fire. Security expert Charlie Miller discovered the security risk by successfully reverse-engineering Apple laptop “smart batteries,” which has allowed Miller to rewrite the embedded controllers for the laptop batteries.

Miller discovered the security flaw with an Apple firmware update in 2009 and noticed the default password used for securing the batteries were the same. This allowed Miller to learn how to read values from the firmware and changed how the battery firmware interacts with the laptop. Miller has successfully bricked over seven Mac laptop batteries. The security vulnerability is focused on the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air laptops.

Miller plans on releasing a firmware update with a utility called “Caulkgun,” which will allow Apple users to change their laptop battery passwords to prevent a security vulnerability. The only downside is that any future Apple patches and updates for the laptop battery would be blocked.

When do I Replace my Laptop Battery?

clock June 1, 2010 19:34 by author Ty

If your laptop battery is a few years old and does not last very long when it is unplugged, then you might be due for a replacement laptop battery. Laptop batteries can usually last between 3-5 years with 300-500 discharge /charge cycles.

Hewlett-Packard has released FAQ information on their lithium-ion batteries and smart battery technology which can be found on their HP battery information page. HP battery life quotes, "Under normal discharge loads, Li-Ion batteries have a life span of between 300 and 500 cycles."

Apple offers a similar FAQ information page on their laptop batteries and their long lasting life span which can be found on the Apple battery information page. Apple battery life quotes, "A properly maintained Apple notebook battery is designed to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity after 300 full charge and discharge cycles."

Between HP and Apple, a typical battery life for today's laptop should be at least 300 discharge / charge cycles, maintaining at least an 80% capacity for up to 3 years. Mileage will vary from laptop to laptop.
