Potato Battery

clock June 21, 2010 20:25 by author Ty

Potatoes can be used as a solid organic electric battery and utilized in countries where electrical infrastructure is not yet established. Boiling the potato increases electrical power by 10 times and using zinc and copper electrodes on a treated potato will produce power 50 fold cheaper than 1.5 Volt D cell batteries. This is an incredibly efficient way of creating green power at a low cost, which can be grown in your backyard. There is one downside, the zinc and copper rods will corrode away and need to be replaced. The power created from the potatoes can be used by low powered devices, such as LED lights, communication devices, and small radios.

Virus on New Olympus Stylus Cameras

clock June 17, 2010 21:18 by author John

A malware infection can be found in the new Olympus Stylus Tough 6010 digital camera's internal memory card. The Olympus camera itself will not get damaged from the virus, but it will infect your Windows PC with an autorun worm. Once the camera is plugged into a Windows PC with a USB cable, then the virus is triggered to autorun. Not all of the Olympus Stylus cameras are infected, however there are over 1700 Olympus Stylus cameras on the market with the virus. This can be found by checking the serial number on the camera.

The Olympus Stylus Tough 6010 is known to be waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof but it is not virus proof.

Olympus has a Tough 6010 support page covering on how to handle the virus issue. There is also a removal process available for the virus. Make sure to use a translator for the page with Google Translator or Babblefish, as it is in Japanese.

Olympus Tough Stylus 6010 technical documentation for the virus:

"Use the products to all the inconvenience and said very sincerely sorry. Humbly apologize."

"When you connect the USB camera to a computer terminal, is operating the software for the computer virus may be automatically remove the virus is detected or below. The name of the virus detection software is different for each virus."

Virus names with AniVirus Protections:

WORM_AUTORUN.KFJ - Trend Micro Inc.
Trojan.Gen - Symantec Corporation

Which Laptops have the Best Battery Life?

clock June 14, 2010 20:48 by author Ty

Laptop Battery Life HP Dell Apple Acer Toshiba Gateway

Sometimes a long laptop battery life is the key factor in why we own a laptop. CNET has done some extensive testing on which laptops have the longest battery life. Of course a netbook would be the winner in this category, but CNET has classified them into different classes. These classes are netbooks, 13-inch laptops, midsize laptops, and desktop replacements.

Each laptop manufacturer has their own determination on how long their laptop's battery life is supposed to last. So instead of having these results skewed, CNET did a benchmark by using a standard video playback test to see how long each laptop lasted playing a movie. Below were their results.

Netbooks (10/11-inch displays) Battery life
Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 (SD) 459 minutes
MSI Wind U160 438 minutes
Acer Aspire One 532h-2326 429 minutes
13-inch laptops
Apple MacBook, Spring 2010 387 minutes
Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch, Spring 2010 360 minutes
Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1324 359 minutes
Midsize laptops (14/15-inch displays)
Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch Spring 2010 356 minutes
Gateway EC5809u 343 minutes
HP Pavilion dv4-2165dx 334 minutes
Desktop replacments (16/17/18-inch displays)
