Latest iPhone and iPod Gadgets

clock October 7, 2010 23:24 by author Jeremy

As we enter the month of Halloween, it seemed only fitting for Mio I-zawa, Japanese designer, to show his latest creation: an iPhone-charging umbilical cord.

If you think the design and picture are awesome, then you should see the video of it: the cord actually moves, pushing your iPhone along with it. Best of all: it really does charge your iPhone with every nutrient-feeding-twitch.

In case you weren't in the market for just a charging cord (or if you just didn't want to read news that brought your breakfast back with it), then check out this nifty gadget: the Icon Power Pack, brought to you by IPEVO.

This external battery will plug into any iPhone 4 or previous generation, and charges with a mini-USB cable (provided). The real kicker is how it lights up when charging or being used. The front panel will show green bars lighting up when charging, and all the green bars will stay on when the battery is fully charged. When plugged into your iPhone, the bars will slowly disappear; when all four bars are flashing, the external battery has been drained and is due for another charge.

Check your Smoke Detector Batteries for Fire Prevention Week

clock October 5, 2010 19:18 by author Ty

Smoke Alarm Fire Prevention Week NFPA

It is fire prevention week promoted by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) and we are encouraging everyone to check and replace their smoke detector batteries in their home. Most smoke detectors in homes are battery powered because many homes are not wired for smoke detector alarms. Alkaline disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries can be used to power the smoke detectors. Smoke detector alkaline batteries should be replaced twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring to ensure that they work. If rechargeable batteries are being used, they should be recharged more frequently on a month to month basis, but we don't recommend using them in smoke detectors. The NFPA, recommends that home-owners replace smoke detector batteries with a new battery at least once per year, when it starts chirping (a signal that its charge is low), or when it fails a test, which the NFPA recommends to be carried out at least once per month by pressing the "test" button on the alarm.

Smoke detector safety tips can be found on the NFPA Web site.

AT&T Now Offers a Satellite-Enabled Smart Phone

clock October 1, 2010 20:02 by author Ty

Satellite cell phones are being pushed again in North America using a combination of AT&T and the TerraStar satellite network. Today AT&T began selling the TerraStar Genus to professional customers through businesses channels and should hit retail stores by the end of the year.

Initial costs of the TerraStar Genus satellite cell phone is $799 and needs the AT&T voice and data service plans to connect with no contract. The AT&T network is used when it is available, and switches to satellite when there is no service. There is an additional charge of $25 per month to use the satellite service and 65 cent per minute of calling. Text messages can also be sent over through the satellite network at a cost of 40 cents per message.  If you need to use the internet when there is no 2G or 3G network available, then an additional $5 per megabyte is added to your cell phone charges.

Of course these charges can add up quickly, but if you have a clear view of the southern sky, you should be able to easily get satellite cell phone signal to make calls, send and receive text messages, and browse the internet. The TerraStar Satellite is one of the largest commercial satellites online with a 60 foot wide gold mesh umbrella and is capable of picking up faint cell phone signals 22,000 miles down. Other companies have attempted to successfully launch a satellite cell phone company, and TerraStar definitely looks promising.

Car Parts that Store Battery Power

clock September 30, 2010 20:25 by author Ty

Volvo is developing car body panels to be used as energy storage with nanomaterials made of extremely thin and strong carbon fiber. The roof, hood and doors will be used as battery storage for energy and can reduce weight by 15% per panel.  By adding these energy battery panels, the battery power capacity is nearly doubled in a hybrid and EV car. Additional rage for an electric vehicle (EV) car is projected to be an additional 80 miles. The body panels will charge and discharge when the car’s electric motor is used. Energy can be stored in the panels thorough the cars alternator / generator, harnessing energy when the car brakes, and by plugging into the electricity power grid. Volvo’s ultimate goal is the replace the battery entirely, but more research and development is required to make that jump.

For the more tech-savvy, device-wearing, constant-blog-updating consumer, Quirky has announced a product that you can not only use, but wear! Trek Support is a backpack that charges multiple devices at once. With 3 USB ports on the Gadget Dock, consumers can charge phones, MP3 players, iPods, cameras, and portable gaming systems. The backpack's integrated rechargeable battery can charge different devices for up to 7 hours.

To hold all these devices, the backpack is designed with numerous mesh pockets, with one laptop sleeve big enough to fit a 15" laptop. And besides the mesh pockets inside the backpack, there are extra mesh pockets on the straps, with a USB port there as well, in case you want to travel while listening to music and charging your device. Two zippered pockets located on the outside of the backpack can hold other items, like wallets.

Trek Device is made out of durable waterproof nylon, with the Gadget Dock and and laptop sleeve made of padded nylon.

And the cherry on top? TSA is allowing these bags to be used in their screening processes. When traveling with the Trek Support, you no longer have to take your laptop out of the backpack: just unzip it the backpack completely, place it on the conveyor belt, and you're good to go.

The only downside is, you can't buy this product directly right now. Quirky's presale will take your credit card and, once they've confirmed that enough units have been bought, the products will ship out. So if you want to order one and get it soon, spreading the news might be a good idea.

For those that prefer a traditional charger and not a whole backpack, ebatts.com sells chargers and batteries for numerous devices...and you won't have to carry a backpack to do it.
