Fairbanks, Alaska Has One of the World's Most Powerful Batteries

clock April 20, 2011 00:33 by author Jeremy

Meet BESS: the Battery Energy Storage System. What exactly is BESS, you ask? Imagine a structure the size of a football-field, in the shape of a horseshoe. Big, right? So big, in fact, that it has to be "watered" down on a regular basis. This Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) contraption is actually thousands of 1.7V Ni-Cad batteries linked together.

Built in 2003 by GVEA (Golden Valley Electric Association) the BESS provides Fairbanks, Alaska with a backup power source. Fairbanks is known to have regular blackouts but thanks to BESS, outages have been reduced by more than 65%. Data gathered by GVEA indicates that the average person in 2003 experienced 3 and a half hours of no electricity; however, in 2010 the time was reduced to 45 minutes.

The BESS is not without its faults though. It was designed only as an interim power source while a backup generator can start, and can only produce roughly 27 megawatts of power for 15 minutes. "If there's a large outage, like 60 megawatts, it doesn't make up for the whole thing and then you have to shed people," said Mike Wright, Vice President of Transmission and Distribution at GVEA.

These "faults" are easily dismissed though, considering it does exactly what it was intended to do. A majority of the time, people won't even notice a blackout due to the BESS picking up on it instantly and providing the necessary power to cover. The BESS is always on, keeping voltages at the right levels in transmission lines when it's not being used for blackouts.

BMW 1 Series - ActiveE Electric Car

BMW ActiveE 1 Series Electric Car

BMW has a second-generation electric car that they have been working on called the ActiveE. The BMW ActiveE is an all-electric version of the BMW 1 Series coupe that is capable of a 100-mile range off of one full charge, and can accelerate from 0-60 in under 9 seconds. The large 33 kWh battery pack takes just 3-5 hours to fully charge off a 240-volt Level 2 charging station. The real-wheel drive electric motor packs 170 horsepower and 185 foot punds of torque. The ActiveE BMW is the second generation of the trial Mini E that was available in Los Angeles and New York with only 450 Mini E electric cars available for a one year lease in June of 2009. The BMW ActiveE will be available in a limited production of 1000 units sometime after 2011, followed by the BMW i3 with a carbon-fiber hatchback, expected to debut in 2013.

With rising fuel prices and the average American commuting 32 miles to work and back, an electric car with a 100 mile range off a full charge makes sense. Technology and innovation for electric vehicles are improving fast and are becoming cost effective for consumers to purchase and drive on an everyday basis. This BMW electric car is ideal, especially if you have a loved one that likes nothing less than a BMW,"The Ultimate Driving Machine.”

You can also find cool applications that function with your iPhone called the BMW ConnectedDrive. This free BMW ActiveE app allows you to call up the current battery status and range of your BMW ActiveE and also checks for any charging stations in the vicinity or near your destination.

For Both the Living and Deceased, There's Just As Many iPad 2's As iPhone 5's

clock April 6, 2011 01:04 by author Jeremy

It's almost crazy how repitition has worked its way into our yearly lifestyle. For example, we expect that every June, at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, we'll get a new iPhone. Meanwhile, the iPad-series gets their own special release date, which also follows the 12-month rule. For a few months before a release, rumors are rampant; whereas a few months after a release, shortages occur.

Currently, we're seeing an overlap in the rumors/shortages department, thanks to the iPhones and iPads having different release schedules. As the world prepares for the WDC in June, we listen to every bit of gossip that even remotely resembles the words "iPhone 5"; simultaneously, we're all out of iPad 2's, even for some who waited in the legendary Apple lines on opening day.

Oddly, we're not the only ones out of iPad 2's. It's not only happening all around the world, but now even in other worlds. What am I talking about, you ask? Why, the deceased, of course!

In China, the deceased are believed to have just as many needs and wants as the living do. Like in ancient Egyptian times, the Chinese will leave gifts at the resting places of loved ones; the difference is that the Chinese leave paper replicas. Though, if it can be afforded, some people will even purchase the real products to leave at tombstones and graves.

Recently, paper vendors in China have begun running low on their iPad and iPhone paper bundles. It's somewhat unfortunate that even the deceased are having trouble getting a copy of the same technology that we're after. Makes you wonder though if they hear the same rumors that we do about the next iPhone 5 supposedly coming out in June. Go ahead, let yourself ponder that one; I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.
